Gin was first produced in the mid-1600s and takes its name from its primary flavouring ingredient, the juniper berry, derived from the Dutch word "genever" (juniper). Gin is essentially a clear spirit with a smooth character and distinctive aroma, obtained through the distillation of grains together with botanicals such as juniper berries, anise, coriander, angelica root, liquorice, cinnamon, fennel, and citrus peels.
